Retaining Body Language in Subjective Virtual Environments Using Artifact-Centred Coordinate Systems

چکیده
Embodiment and subjectivity are important research issues for collaborative virtual environments. We claim that the direction and distance of an embodiment are the most important indicators of the relation between a user and surrounding objects or other users. In an objective view of a virtual environment, embodiment motion is unambiguous since all users will see all other users and all artifacts in the same positions. However, there are many reasons to present different views of the same basic data set to different users. If objects end up in different positions in different views, we cannot retain a common coordinate system for the embodiments, since directions and distances are distorted. We present an implementation of artifact-centred coordinate mappings by which the positions of the artifacts that the user is interacting with govern how that user is represented to other users of the system.

Body-Centred Configuration in Collaborative Virtual Environments
With the increase in number of VR applications and increasing complexity of VR systems the user is provided with a multiplicity of different options for configuring their embodiment in the virtual world, the style of interface (immersive or desktop), application specific parameters and even whether they wish to use the system in a subjective or objective manner. However, there is no single, fle...
متن کاملReport on the Second Second Challenge on Generating Instructions in Virtual Environments (GIVE-2.5)
GIVE-2.5 evaluates eight natural language generation (NLG) systems that guide human users through solving a task in a virtual environment. The data is collected via the Internet, and to date, 536 interactions of subjects with one of the NLG systems have been recorded. The systems are compared using both task performance measures and subjective ratings by human users.
متن کاملRepresentations Systems, Perceptual Position, and Presence in Immersive Virtual Environments
This paper discusses factors that may contribute to the participant's sense of presence in immersive virtual environments. We distinguish between external factors, that is those wholly determined by the hardware and software technology employed to generate the environment, and subjective factors, that is how sensory inputs to the human participant are processed internally. The therapeutic techn...
متن کاملNavigation of a Mobile Robot Using Virtual Potential Field and Artificial Neural Network
Mobile robot navigation is one of the basic problems in robotics. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for autonomous mobile robot navigation in an unknown environment. The proposed approach is based on learning virtual parallel paths that propel the mobile robot toward the track using a multi-layer, feed-forward neural network. For training, a human operator navigates the mobile robot in ...
متن کاملUtilising Past Event Histories in a Process-Centred Software Engineering Environment
When working on complex software systems, it is often difficult for multiple software developers to coordinate their work, and for developers to coordinate their multiple tool and software process usage. Process-centred Software Engineering Environments attempt to help developers manage the complexities of such coordination by codifying steps in a software process, and codifying the "work conte...
